Abstract

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with low water solubility, resulting in limited bioavailability. The formulation of meloxicam effervescent tablets using solid dispersion technology is one approach to enhancing solubility and improving the dissolution rate. This study aims to investigate the effect of effervescent components and polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG 4000) as a carrier in the solid dispersion system on the production of meloxicam effervescent tablets, including physical quality and dissolution profiles.  This study used four formulas obtained from the application of Design Expert using a factorial design method with variations in citric acid concentration (15% and 25%) and PEG 4000 (4 and 6 parts citric acid). The research data were analyzed statistically using SPSS with one-way ANOVA.  The results showed that the effervescent components citric acid and PEG 4000 significantly influenced the physical quality and dissolution of meloxicam effervescent tablets. The formulation with 25% citric acid and 6 parts PEG 4000 increased the angle of repose, reduced hardness, increased friability, and increased disintegration time. The dissolution of effervescent meloxicam tablets showed that citric acid had a more dominant effect on increasing the solubility of meloxicam at 3 minutes compared to PEG 4000, whereas after 3 minutes, PEG 4000 had a more dominant effect on increasing solubility compared to citric acid.
