Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease often called a silent killer because it can cause serious complications without early symptoms. It remains a major public health problem in Indonesia and globally, with a steadily increasing prevalence. The success of hypertension control depends greatly on patients’ adherence to pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy. However, adherence levels in Indonesia are still low, partly due to limited knowledge. Adequate understanding can improve treatment discipline, while poor knowledge often leads patients to stop or reduce medication on their own. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge level and medication adherence among hypertensive patients at Garuda Public Health Center, Bandung. A quantitative analytic approach with a cross-sectional design was used on 100 patients selected through quota sampling. Research instruments included a knowledge questionnaire and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), with data analyzed using Spearman’s rho test at a 95% confidence level. Results showed that most respondents had good knowledge and moderate adherence, with a strong positive correlation (r=0.984; p=0.000). The study concludes that better knowledge leads to higher medication adherence. Therefore, continuous health education is essential to enhance patient understanding and improve hypertension management outcomes.
